Ukraine in the ‘Soviet Century’

Join this HUM:Global Talk!

We will examine and discuss how Soviet rule shaped Ukraine’s political, social and cultural development throughout the twentieth century, and how Ukrainians navigated, resisted and challenged Soviet power.

The conversation will trace Ukraine’s experiences under Soviet rule, from the reshaping of its borders and political institutions to the devastating consequences of famine, mass repression and restrictions on Ukrainian language and culture. The discussion will explore how different communities experienced Soviet policies, how Ukrainian identity and cultural expression persisted, and how forms of political and cultural resistance emerged throughout this period.

The event will also consider how the legacies of Soviet rule continue to shape contemporary understandings of Ukrainian history, identity and Ukraine’s place within Europe.

The event is the second in a four-part series exploring Ukraine’s history as an integral part of European history.

Keep an eye out for upcoming events in the series in December 2026 and February 2027!
